I had one today because I met some great local business owners. Our local council run seminars for micro business once a month. this month it was me talking about “What Customer’s Want You To Know But Won’t Say to Your Face” the guts being they don;t care about you they just want to know what’s in it for me?

In essence small business internet marketing is marketing just using the world wide web. Addressing your market, answering their concerns, solving their problems and speaking directly to them are still the core concerns – you just have a more flexible, targeted, leveraged way of doing it.
The reason it was one of those special days was because unlike secy social media I had a small enough group to have checked them all out online before the day. We were small enough to have a more in-the-round type conversation rather than a seminar. It was so much fun and we were getting so into it – that we forgot to break and went 2 hours straight.
The best thing was these business owners were so motivated to learn. Yet they are so often overlooked by service providers because of their size or they are offered packages that are outside their budgets with no real offer of results.
DIY Online Business
So regularly finding myself in a position to empower these people with knowledge I have been brain dumping everything I know into a DIY online business course. I have chosen to break it into 5 modules – research, content, website, seo and passive, recurring income models. The best part is I love doing it and regularly get told that it’s the first time they’ve understood and how all this e-stuff suddenly seems to make sense.
This is a big step for me and I have people like these business owners to thank for giving me the push to do something I’ve been wanting to do for some time but been too afraid to start.
I’ve been putting off this course like most of these people put off websites and SEO. Too much to know, not knowing how to start so….not starting. Well now I have started because you need to know how to do these things in business. Even if you choose not to do the DIY option you need to know how to make sound business decisions on who to trust.
Focus On Your Customer and Return on Investment
My best advice to one business today vetting SEO firms – focus not on SEO but on customers and keep framing your questions of them in terms of customers and returns. How many customers will this be putting me in front of. How many customers can I expect this to bring to my business. What are you doing that you can guarantee me you are getting me in front of the most customers searching for me.
The gist of all this – if you’re in business stop focusing on the website and get back to customers. Start thinking of your online business as Word of Mouse in the same way you approach your offline business Word of Mouth.
