How Can You Market If Your Don’t Know Who You’re Marketing To?
I know this may seem obvious but in the last few months almost every small business marketing discussion I have has centred on one thing
– Who Is Your Market!
The reason I say obvious is because if you’re in business you are selling something. Whether it is a product or service – you need to sell it. To sell it effectively you need to know what solution it offers.
If you know the solution you have then you really have to know the problems it solves. If you know that you surely must know who has that problem. You need to know that to get in front of them.
No Business is Selling to Everyone
Unfortunately this is the starting point that many small businesses come from. If we try to sell to everyone we won’t miss anyone. When in fact you miss everyone.
You miss everyone because you fail to connect with anyone.
I am still shocked by how many businesses do not know their market. If I was to ask you your ideal client what would your answer be?
Think about it for a moment.
Who Is Your Ideal Client?
Name, age, married or single, kids or not, interests, education, occupation, dress sense. Where do they go online? What do they do online? Where do you need to be to be in front of them speaking to them online.
A social media strategy could be wasted if your ideal clients are not users of social media. Or, social media could be the source of your greatest success because it allows you to target so specifically.
If You Don’t Know who They Are You Can’t Reach Them
Small business marketing tip #1 therefore is to take the time right now to think about your ideal client. It doesn’t mean you don’t have other clients. It doesn’t mean that different products or services all serve the same ideal client.
What it means though is if you take the time to know them and know them well then you will be able to engage them effectively and that will put you ahead of almost every other business online, offline and certainly within your market.
